Volunteering

Guests in Washington Women In Need's office are surrounded by images of daring women who risked and succeeded.

Beneath a framed print of Margaret Mead, hundreds of low-income women have met with us as we have embraced them with dignity and respect. Dr. Mead is often quoted as saying, "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have."

Are you one of those few caring people? If you find yourself in alignment with our mission to help low-income women and provide assistance in a way that engenders empowerment and responsibility, please consider joining our team of dedicated volunteers. Nothing is more satisfying than the feeling that comes from working with others in a caring atmosphere to make a meaningful difference.

If you have the passion, put it to work. Our staff is warm and experienced and provides the training and support you need to succeed, whether as part of our office support team, a special event volunteer, or as a one-on-one mentor with a woman. Please join us.

The following tasks are on-going responsibilities delegated to our volunteers:

Clerical Support
This job varies weekly, but includes making new client files, copying documents and materials necessary for the WWIN program, sorting returned checks, mailing client applications, pulling files for payment, filing, responding to requests for information about WWIN, putting together packets of information for clients, and others. Some of this is done on computer and requires a working knowledge of Microsoft Word. Contact volunteer@wawomeninneed.org or call 425-451-8838.

Time commitment: Two to four hours of time per week, on a specific day. We have specific tasks to be accomplished each day of the week. Office hours 8:00-5:00.

Data Entry
Each of our 300 active client files is updated on computer. Notes are kept on each client reflecting any contact the client has with the office, whether by phone, in person, or by mail. In addition, we log into each client file the specific financial transactions on behalf of the client. This work is done on computer and requires a working knowledge of Microsoft Word. Contact volunteer@wawomeninneed.org or call 425-451-8838.

Time commitment: Two to four hours of time per week, on a specific day. We have specific tasks to be accomplished each day of the week. Office hours 8:00-5:00.

Bulk Mailings
Each year WWIN mails two newsletters and three direct mail appeals to a mailing list of approximately 6000. These mailings require many hands. The process involves stuffing envelopes, sealing, and labeling. The mailings take most of the day and WWIN provides lunch and, sometimes, on-site massage! A great team of volunteers share book, movie, and travel reviews throughout the day! Contact volunteer@wawomeninneed.org or call 425-451-8838.

Time commitment: Four to six hours of time for bulk mailing. We have three bulk mailings in the fall and two in the spring. Call to find out the time of the next bulk mailing.

Other volunteer opportunities

Special Events
WWIN presents two major events each year. They are called our Spring Benefit Fundraising Luncheons. One is held in Bellevue and draws a crowd of over 600 and the other is held in Seattle and draws over 400 guests. We have two separate committees to manage and produce each event. These committees begin to meet monthly beginning in the fall and the luncheons are scheduled for April and May each year. Contact volunteer@wawomeninneed.org or call 425-451-8838.

Other volunteer opportunities

Internship
Each year WWIN provides an opportunity for a local college student to perform an Internship with the organization. Past interns have been involved in the Human Services Program of Western Washington University and The Northwest College, Psychology Program. The interns learn all aspects of managing a small non-profit organization. Contact volunteer@wawomeninneed.org or call 425-451-8838.
