The Women We Serve

"My husband abandoned me and our two children after 22 years of marriage.
I was suddenly the family's breadwinner, even though I have been out
of school for nearly two decades and had no relevant job skills.
My life was out of control and I didn't know where to turn." Mary.

The Women WWIN serves:

  • Average gross annual income is $10,300 or less.
  • 38% have dependent children under the age of 18 living with them.
  • 30% of women with dependent children are receiving child support.

Since 1992 when WWIN was founded, the need for its services has steadily increased.

The current status of health care in Washington provides low-income women with few options for health insurance coverage or affordable dental care. Community mental health clinics do offer an option for mental health care for some low-income women, but they differ from WWIN programs in an important respect: WWIN provides a straight grant to cover a total of 24 visits and up to one year with a therapist of the client's choosing.

For women returning to school to update outdated education, or women pursuing new training to compete in the fast changing job market of today, grants and scholarships are scarce.

For all of these reasons, the mission of Washington Women In Need is as relevant and necessary today as it was in 1992.

For evidence of the urgent need for the unique services WWIN provides, simply ask the over 300 women we fund each year, or the hundreds more who call us for help and must be refused. When a woman asks where else she can find the kind of support WWIN provides, with all of the flexibility and choice WWIN offers, sadly and frustratingly the answer seems to be "nowhere."

No other program pays for their clients' choice of doctors, dentists, and counselors. No other program pays health insurance premiums in an era when health care costs are increasing without limit. No other programs afford low-income women the level of power, choice, and self-determination that WWIN provides.
