Bellevue and Seattle Communities Join Together to Help Washington Women In Need

WWIN raised a grand total of $540,000 at its annual spring luncheons held in Seattle and Bellevue. All of the money raised will directly go to establishing grants for women who need assistance in the following areas: education tuition and books; physical, vision, dental and hearing health services; health care insurance premiums; mental health counseling.

“WWIN is fortunate to have a multitude of talented individuals come together to honor, celebrate and support the organization’s mission to improve the lives of low income women,” said Deborah Cushing, executive director of WWIN. “I am honored to be part of this community and want to thank our donors and partners for their contributions and continued support over the years as their commitment to WWIN helps to build a bridge to a brighter future for women in Washington – one woman at a time. “We could not produce this event without our volunteers and I want to recognize their significant contribution to our success.”

Emceed by Mimi Jung in Seattle and Lori Matsukawa of KING 5 Television in Bellevue, the luncheons featured a testimonial by WWIN client Jennell Hicks, a single mom who moved to Seattle with her three young children in search of employment and a better life. She earned an associate’s degree from Seattle Central College, and then with the help of WWIN, she went on to Seattle University and earned her bachelor’s degree in public administration. Today, Jennell works at the King County Health Department and provides in-home counseling to families in crisis on behalf of a Seattle psychologist.

“I am eternally grateful for the education grant from WWIN. Allowing me to get a college degree has changed my life and my children’s lives for the better in so many ways,” said Jennell Hicks. “All three of my children are enrolled in college and I will begin working toward a Master’s degree in social work this September at the University of Washington. I don’t think any of this would have happened if it hadn’t been for the help Washington Women In Need provided me.”

Over 1000 attended the luncheons to support and help raise money for the organization. The Seattle luncheon was held on March 25 and the Bellevue luncheon took place on April 24.

The commitment of Julia Pritt, the founder of WWIN, is so profound that she pays 100 percent of the operating expenses of WWIN. As always, every penny of the money raised at this year’s fundraisers will go directly to financial assistance for education and health care for low income women determined to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of their families.
